In recent decades, regional integration has become a vital part of governance and economic stability in order to keep up with the changes to global politics brought on by globalization. This process has included the establishment of regional organisations which have been highlighted as the gateway to achieving regional development. It encompasses the collective energy of countries in the same geographic region to amass their knowledge, security strategy, trade power, and education system with the aim of improving the region as a single entity. This dissertation serves as a preamble to a much wider research on the effects that the current state of regional integration in the Southern African Development Community or SADC has on the rate of development in South Africa.

As such, it will outline an introduction that includes the problem statement to highlight why the research is being conducted as well as the significance of the research to show the benefit that this research aims to provide and the objectives in its specified demographic. The next chapter is a deeper look into the topic such as preferential trade agreements and societal challenges, then goes on to highlight the gaps within these themes that this specific research hopes to address. The third chapter will briefly explain what methodology was applied in successfully attaining the aims of the research in the fourth chapter which outlines and discusses the findings of the research. Finally, the fifth chapter will conclude the research and provide recommendation toward solving the development problem in South Africa.
