520 _aIn the previous couple of years, companies did not take into consideration the importance of corporate governance and how the corporate governance can influence firm’s daily business operations as well as creating value not only to the shareholders as well as positively impacting the surrounding environment through implementation of good business practises. In simpler terms, ICAEW (2019) has defined corporate governance as a framework and system in which it is adopted by the companies whereby CG framework directs and controls the company. In accordance to ICAEW (2019) , the main purpose of corporate governance is to facilitate and ensure the entrepreneurial, prudent and effective management in which it can help companies to deliver and attain long-term success rather than just short-term period. Therefore, it is important for companies to improve the overall system of corporate governance framework in order to ensure the company is able to grow and survive for a long-term period. An excellent corporate governance system can be achieved within the company when there is an appropriate balance when it comes to ownership and control as well as considering the interest of other stakeholders in the company. However, last few decades has raised concerns over the practises of corporate governance in Tanzania due to the corporations that are state owned which have been involved in corruption, nepotism and embezzlement. Managerial incompetence and poor subsidization from the government in bailing out failing corporations have raised concerns from the public on the practises of good corporate governance in the country. The general objective of this study is to analyse the impacts of corporate governance system on firms performance in Dar Es Salaam which is the hub of large financial activities. This study utilises secondary data mainly financial statements of companies in Tanzania from previous 5 years from 2013 up to 2018. The results indicate that corporate governance has a positive effect on firm performance. This indicate that the strong the corporate governance the effective and better the firm performance.
